Warm feet while working from home:
which costs least?

Ms. Hakari, the scales
The short answer: the cheapest is an electric lap blanket, at about ¥0.7 an hour on medium. A desk panel heater (160 W) costs up to about ¥5.0, and a ceramic heater on low (600 W) about ¥18.6.
The reason is simple: the closer to your body the heat is, the less electricity it takes. Working from home 8 hours a day, 20 days a month, a lap blanket costs about ¥110 a month and a ceramic heater on low about ¥3,000.

Why closer is cheaper

Heating cost depends mostly on what you heat. A lap blanket touching you heats only you; a panel heater around your legs heats the space around them; a ceramic fan heater heats the air at your feet. The wider the area, the more heat escapes.

We couldn't find published per-hour energy figures for the panel and under-desk heaters, so we used their rated (maximum) power. Models that ease off with a thermostat use less in practice.

Professor Plug: a lap blanket may say "55 W", but once warm it cuts back, using only 23 Wh an hour on medium. It works just like an electric blanket.

Which one? Answers by situation

Cheapest above all: an electric lap blanket. Wrap it from your knees to your toes so less heat escapes
Up and down a lot: a panel heater. Nothing to take off every time you stand up
Little legroom, tidy desk: an under-desk heater fixed beneath the desktop
The whole room is cold: don't just put up with it — heat the room with the air conditioner (about ¥2–4 an hour for 6 tatami; see the ranking)

Watch out for low-temperature burns

The closer a heater is to your body and the longer you use it, the more you need to watch for low-temperature burns. NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation) says they can occur after 3–4 hours of contact at 44°C, 30 minutes to 1 hour at 46°C, or 2–3 minutes at 50°C.

Good to know if you live in Japan

  1. Search in Japanese

Electric lap blanket is 電気ひざ掛け (or 電気ひざかけ). Panel heater is パネルヒーター; desk panel heater is デスクパネルヒーター; under-desk heater is デスクヒーター.
  2. Look for the PSE mark

Household power here is 100V. Buy electric heating products with the PSE mark that are made for Japan.
  3. Your electricity rate may differ

We use ¥31/kWh, the industry guideline. Your actual rate depends on your plan and power company.

FAQ

What's the difference between a lap blanket and an electric blanket?
They work the same way; a lap blanket is sized to drape over you (such as 140 × 82 cm). Koden's lap blankets reach about 40°C on high, lower than the company's electric blankets (about 52°C on high).
Does a panel heater really cost "¥5 an hour"?
That's the maximum, running at 160 W for a full hour. Models that ease off with a thermostat use less. The maker doesn't publish per-hour energy use, so we calculate the maximum here.
Can I use a lap blanket and a panel heater together?
You can use both, but never cover a panel heater with a blanket or cloth — heat builds up and it's dangerous. Follow each product's manual.
