The short version…

  • 2 tatami on medium is about ¥7.1 an hour; on high, about ¥5 per tatami

Hot carpet: Panasonic's published figures (15°C room). "Half" is our estimate at half of the full figure (Panasonic says switching off the unused zone cuts the cost to "up to about half" of full use). Kotatsu: Yamazen furniture-style kotatsu, high, about 170 Wh. Electric blanket: Yamazen YFTKB-55, medium, about 25 Wh. Ceramic heater: low, 600 W.

Who it suits — and who it doesn't

For life on the floor. Switch to an electric blanket for sleeping

○ Good for you if…

  • You often sit or lie on the floor
  • Cold floors and cold feet bother you
  • Your kids play on the floor (it doubles as a rug)
  • You'd like to turn the air conditioner down a little

× Not for you if…

  • You mostly sit on a sofa or chairs
  • You want to warm the air in the whole room (try an air conditioner or oil heater)
  • You tend to fall asleep on it
  • You only need to warm your own feet (a kotatsu or electric blanket costs less)

A hot carpet warms where you sit. For a floor where the family lounges around, it's just right.

How it works, and zone switching

It warms you through contact. Zone switching heats one side only

Heating wires run through the carpet and warm the parts of your body touching it. An insulating layer underneath blocks the cold floor, so less heat escapes from your body into it. Most models split the surface into 2 (or 3) zones so you can heat only the side you use.

Cost by size (and per tatami)

Hourly cost from 1 to 3 tatami, and the floor-heating type

These are Panasonic's published energy use per hour (15°C room, industry measurement method). "Per tatami" is our own division. 1 tatami ≈ 1.6 m².

Carpet types cost about ¥5 per tatami on high, whatever the size — bigger ones cost more simply because they're bigger. The wood-look floor-heating type (かんたん床暖) uses about 1.8–1.9 times as much for the same size.

Professor Plug
Professor Plug: buy 3 tatami "just in case" and run it all, and you pay about 1.4 times what 2 tatami costs. Matching the size you actually use is the best saving.

5 tips for choosing

Size, zone switching, auto-off, carpet or floor-heating type, cover
  1. Size it to where you sit

Cost goes up roughly with size. Smaller for one or two people, bigger for a family lounging on the floor. If you go big, get one with zone switching.
  2. Check the zone switching

Some models offer 2 or 3 zones (2面切替 / 3面切替). If you always sit in the same spot, heating just that part avoids waste.
  3. Auto shut-off

Panasonic's models switch off automatically after a set time (8 hours). It's worth having, in case you nod off with it on.
  4. Carpet type or floor-heating type?

The wood-look floor-heating type looks neat, but as the table shows it costs about 1.8–1.9 times as much. If running cost matters most, choose a carpet type.
  5. Heater only, or with a cover?

Some hot carpets are sold as the heated base only (本体のみ); others come with a cover (カバー付き). With base only, you'll need a cover or rug of the same size.

Avoiding low-temperature burns

Don't stay on one spot too long. Don't use it to sleep

A hot carpet warms you by contact, so staying on the same spot for a long time can cause a low-temperature burn. Japan's NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation) says burns can occur after 3–4 hours at 44°C, 30 minutes to 1 hour at 46°C, or 2–3 minutes at 50°C. Panasonic also warns about low-temperature burns, dehydration and heatstroke.

Don't: sleep on a hot carpet
Instead: switch it off at bedtime. In bed, use an electric blanket and turn it off before sleeping or use the timer
Don't: leave babies, older people or anyone who can't easily turn over lying on it for long
Instead: keep it on a lower setting and check on them often
Don't: lie down on it after drinking with it switched on
Instead: switch it off when you feel sleepy. Auto shut-off helps if you forget

Good to know if you live in Japan

100V, the PSE mark, Japanese manuals and more
  1. Search in Japanese

Hot carpet is ホットカーペット (also 電気カーペット). Size is in 畳 (tatami): 1畳, 2畳, 3畳. Base only is 本体のみ; cover is カバー; zone switching is 面切替.
  2. Sizes in tatami

1 tatami ≈ 1.6 m², so 2 tatami ≈ 3.3 m² and 3 tatami ≈ 5 m². Check the exact dimensions in centimeters on the product page.
  3. Look for the PSE mark

Household power here is 100V. Electric carpets are covered by Japan's electrical safety law, so buy one with the PSE mark that's made for Japan.
  4. Your electricity rate may differ

We use ¥31/kWh, the industry guideline. Your actual rate depends on your plan and power company.

FAQ

Is a kotatsu cheaper?
Per hour, a kotatsu on high is about ¥5.3 and a 2-tatami hot carpet on medium about ¥7.1, so the kotatsu is a little cheaper. It warms only the space under its quilt, while a hot carpet warms a wide area of floor. For one person, a 1-tatami hot carpet (about ¥3.7 on medium) or zone switching are also options.
Does using it with the air conditioner save money?
With less chill coming up from the floor, it's easier to turn the air conditioner down. Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy estimates that lowering the heating setting from 21°C to 20°C saves about ¥1,650 a year (6°C outside, 9 hours a day). Weigh that against the hot carpet's own cost.
Can it replace floor heating?
It warms in a similar way, but only where it's laid — not the whole floor like built-in floor heating. Think of it as a way to warm the spot where you sit in a rental without floor heating.
