The real cost of a humidifier
depends on
your heater.

Choudo-kun

The short version…

  • To run the unit: steam about ¥12.7 an hour, evaporative about ¥0.4
  • Count the heat it takes from your room, and evaporative wins in a room heated by an air conditioner
  • Ultrasonic types need fresh water and a washed tank every day

Cost per liter of water

Assumes the unit runs at full output the whole time (with a humidity sensor on auto, real use is lower). The heating share is an estimate: about 0.68 kWh of heat is needed to evaporate 1 liter, and the humidifier's own electricity also ends up as room heat. Ventilation and insulation are ignored. The air conditioner is counted at 2.5× for a cold day (the same basis as Oil heater vs air conditioner).

The 4 types compared

Steam, evaporative, ultrasonic and hybrid — cost and cleaning compared

Costs come from each maker's published power use and output, at ¥31/kWh. "Per liter" is what the unit itself costs to put 1 liter of water into the air.

Steam suits you if…

  • You want as little cleaning as possible
  • Your room is heated by an electric or oil heater
  • You want strong humidifying, e.g. in a bedroom

Evaporative or hybrid suits you if…

  • You run it for long hours in a room with air-con heating
  • You'd rather the outlet didn't get hot (small children)
  • You don't mind looking after a filter

Ultrasonic models are cheap and quiet, but they spray the tank water straight into the room. Only for people who won't skip the cleaning!

How they work — and the heat they take from your room

Evaporating 1L of water takes about 0.68kWh of heat. Where it comes from matters

Evaporating water takes heat: about 0.68 kWh per liter (from the heat of vaporization of water at 20°C, about 2,450 kJ/kg). Where that heat comes from is what separates the types.

Steam Electricity pays for evaporation Heater boils water Steam Evaporative / ultrasonic The room air pays for evaporation Warm air A little cooler, more humid Your heater replaces the lost heat

← Scroll sideways →

A steam humidifier pays for all of that heat with electricity, which is why it costs more to run. Evaporative and ultrasonic types use little power themselves, but they borrow heat from the room air to evaporate the water, and your heater makes up for it.

If that heater is an electric or oil heater, 1 kWh of electricity gives 1 kWh of heat. Either way you end up paying for about 0.68 kWh per liter in electricity, so the totals come out almost the same. An air conditioner moves several times more heat than the electricity it uses, so the evaporative type, which borrows room heat, works out cheaper.

Professor Plug
Professor Plug: every watt a humidifier uses ends up as heat in your room too. So the fair comparison is the unit's own cost plus what your heater has to make up.

Hygiene: choose by how much cleaning you'll do

Change the water and wash the tank daily for ultrasonic types (Ministry of Health)

Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare warns that humidifiers can spread Legionella bacteria, and says to change the water every day and wash the container for ultrasonic and similar types. Because Legionella is killed in 5 minutes at 60°C, it says types that heat water to make steam are unlikely to be a source of infection.

TypeWhat to doNote
SteamChange the tank water; remove white mineral scaleBoiling keeps germs down. The outlet gets hot
Evaporative / hybridChange the tank water; wash the filter and trayClean or replace the filter as the manual says
UltrasonicChange the water and wash the container every dayThe tank water goes straight into the air as mist

Choosing only on running cost often leads to cleaning regrets. Ask yourself first: will I really wash it every day?

5 tips for choosing

Read the wooden-room rating, humidity sensor, tank, cleaning, placement
  1. Read the room size for a "wooden Japanese-style room"

Humidifiers list two sizes, such as "木造和室 9 tatami / プレハブ洋室 15 tatami". Under the industry standard (JEM1426), the wooden-room figure is the smaller one. When in doubt, match that smaller figure to your room (1 tatami ≈ 1.6 m²).
  2. Get one with a humidity sensor and auto mode

Turning output down automatically at your set humidity prevents over-humidifying and cuts the bill. Our calculator assumes full output, so real costs are lower.
  3. Check tank size and continuous run time

The Sharp HV-T55 (about 4.0 L tank), for example, runs about 7.2 hours on high and about 19 hours on quiet. If you'll use it overnight, make sure it won't run dry.
  4. Easy to clean

Can you get your hand inside the tank? Do the filter and tray come out for washing? For evaporative and hybrid types, also check how often the filter needs replacing and what it costs.
  5. Decide where it goes first

Steam outlets get hot, so keep them out of reach of children and pets. Near a window it can cause condensation; the middle of the room is better.

Common mistakes

Not washing an ultrasonic tank for days, over-humidifying, and 2 more
Mistake: topping up an ultrasonic tank for days without washing it
Instead: change the water daily and wash the container (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare)
Mistake: over-humidifying until the windows stream with condensation
Instead: watch a hygrometer and aim for 50–60%. For window condensation, see window insulation film
Mistake: choosing on running cost alone, then finding the evaporative model makes the room feel cooler
Instead: the heat for evaporation comes from the room air. Think about it together with your heater
Mistake: buying a "prefab Western room 8 tatami" model for an 8-tatami room and not getting enough moisture
Instead: match the wooden-room figure to your room size

Good to know if you live in Japan

Japanese search terms, 100V models, room-size ratings
  1. Search in Japanese

Humidifier is 加湿器. Steam type is スチーム式, evaporative is 気化式, ultrasonic is 超音波式, hybrid is ハイブリッド式. Room size is 適用床面積 or 適用畳数.
  2. Buy a model made for Japan

Household power here is 100V. Overseas models may not be designed for it, so choose one sold for the Japanese market.
  3. Manuals are usually in Japanese

Cleaning steps and filter replacement times are in the manual. A phone translation app works well on the cleaning pages.
  4. Your electricity rate may differ

We use ¥31/kWh, the industry guideline. Your actual rate depends on your plan and power company.

FAQ

What humidity should I aim for?
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's influenza Q&A (FY2024) says that keeping indoor humidity at 50–60% with a humidifier can be effective in dry rooms. Too high and you'll get condensation on windows and walls, so keep a hygrometer nearby.
Does a steam humidifier warm the room?
Only a little. Most of the electricity used to make steam is stored in the water vapor as heat of evaporation, so the room temperature doesn't rise much. But unlike an evaporative type it doesn't cool the room, so your heater has less to do.
Which type is cheapest to run?
For the unit alone, evaporative (about ¥0.4 an hour). Including what your heater makes up, evaporative, ultrasonic and hybrid eco mode are cheapest in a room with air-con heating, and all types come out about the same with an electric or oil heater. Try the calculator above.
Can I humidify without a humidifier?
Drying laundry indoors or hanging a damp towel works on the same principle as an evaporative humidifier, and it also borrows heat from the room — so it pairs well with air-con heating.
